The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lucy Irungu led the staff and students of Machakos University in marking the University Tree Planting on Thursday 26th April, 2018. Speaking before planting her tree (Punus Africana), the Vice-Chancellor noted that the Government through the Ministry of Environment earmarked 26th April 2018 as the National Tree Planting Day, which also coincided with the day set as “Machakos University Tree Planting Day”

“With the negative impact of climate change and environmental threats caused by among others, forest destruction, there is a compelling need for all Kenyans to participate in environmental restoration and reforestation. Machakos University is must be a role model in the application of the knowledge and skills we generate. It is time now we walk the talk” The Vice-Chancellor said.

The Vice-Chancellor informed all members of Machakos University fraternity that every 26th April of each year shall be Machakos University Tree Planting Day. This exercise will not only focus on planting trees in the university compound, but in the entire region. Indeed, in seeking to plant 500 trees on this day of the launch, the staff and students planted 100 trees at Muthini Primary School and Machakos Technical Institute for the Blind, while 300 were planted in the compound. The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by Prof. Peter Mwita (Deputy Vice-Chancellor in-charge of Research, Innovation and Linkages) who organized the event through the Community and Extension Service Committee; Prof. Joyce Agalo (Deputy Vice-Chancellor in-charge of Academic and Students’ Affairs) and a team of staff and students. Prof. Peter Mwita urged the Machakos University fraternity to always mark the 26th day of April in their diaries and strive to increase forest coverage in the county.
“Trees may be without us, but we may not be without trees. We need trees, let us plant trees”. Prof. Mwita told those present.
