The Cabinet Secretary for Education through the gazette notice no. 112 of 7th August, 2017 appointed Dr. Mechah Charles Moturi as the Chairman, Machakos University Council and Ms. Karen Basiye Itela, Mr. Richard Mativo Musau, Ms. Florence Muthoni Gichohi, Ms. Lorna Mbatia and Mr. Tom Mboya Wambua as members. This was following the expiry of the previous Council’s term which elapsed on 31st July, 2017. The outgoing Chairman, Dr. Charles Maranga handed over the reigns to the incoming Chairman at the grandiose inauguration ceremony held in the Machakos University Boardroom on Thursday 7th August, 2017. The ceremony was also attended by the full University Management Board.
In his handover speech, Dr. Maranga outlined the achievements of the outgoing Council since it was appointed in July, 2013. These included: overseeing the successful transition from a University College of Kenyatta University to a full-fledged university at the ceremony presided over by The President of Republic of Kenya, His Excellency, Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta on 7th October, 2016; Mentoring of Masinga Technical Training Institute from ground breaking, construction and handing over to Nkabune Training Institute in 2016; Installation of the Top Management through competitive interviews including the Principal and Deputy Principals of the University College, Deputy-Vice-Chancellors, Registrars and Chief Finance Officer of the University; Increase of student population from zero in degree courses to the current population of over 7500 students; Recruitment of qualified academic staff including Professors, Lecturers, Assistant Lecturers, and Tutorial fellows; Infrastructural development including the Machakos University Hotel and Conference Centre, the New Classroom and Tuition Block, extension of the Engineering Block and the just initialised six storey Tuition and Administration Block; Increased land size from 43 acres to 85 acres following allocation by the Machakos County Government; and leaving the University in a sound financial position where it is able to meet all of its obligations.
The outgoing Chairman, congratulated the University Management for their performance since being appointed. He noted that the Council and Management had worked harmoniously despite being faced with various challenges at the transition including low capitation, competition with other institutions and transition from a Technical Institute, University College and finally a full-fledged University. He welcomed the New Council and wished them well as they take over the mantle of the university. The Vice-Chancellor; Prof Francis M. Mathooko on behalf of the Management praised the outgoing Council for the strategic direction they had taken the university including the Land Use Master Plan and the Strategic Plan which had and shall continue guiding the infrastructural development of the University. The incoming Chairman of Council; in his speech congratulated the major milestones that the outgoing Council had taken the university through and assured all stakeholders that the incoming Council would ensure that the university continues in its core mandate of providing quality university education, research and innovation. The New Council has been appointed for a period of three (3) years w.e.f. 1st August, 2017
