The STEM Mentorship visited Machakos University with an aim of gathering knowledge and exposing the young girls to a University environment. The participants included over 100 students drawn from various Girls High Schools who were taken round during the academic tour. The girls managed to visit the Science and Engineering laboratories. The chief guest, Machakos University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lucy W. Irungu was represented by the DVC-ASA, Prof. Joyce Agalo who opened the forum with a powerful message of encouragement to the girls. She encouraged them to believe and value themselves knowing that they are quite capable of growing to become great achievers. She was flanked by Deans from the School of Engineering and School of Pure and Applied Sciences. The Dean School of Engineering, Dr. Charles Mwaniki, gave an opportunity to an engineering student who gave her story and journey through the engineering studies. The Dean, School of Pure and Applied Sciences, Dr. Mailu, also gave a chance to various featured women in his School to give a word of encouragement to the gilrs. The girls and mentors were then taken on a tour to the Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratories. They also managed to visit the Electrical, Mechanical, and Automotive Engineering Workshops. In his conclusive remarks, the Dean of Students, Dr. Alex Kamwaria assured the young gilrs that Machakos University had the best learning environment that any student would thrive in. The STEM Mentorship is a global programme that features various prominent women in the academic, business, industrial and social cadre’s.
