Dr. Charles Maranga, PhD
University Council Chairperson

On behalf of Council, Management, Staff, and Students I am greatly honoured to welcome you to celebrate with us this golden opportunity of the award of Charter. For the last three years, the University College has thirsted for this and we thank God it has come to be. To us, the significance of the accreditation is prove of the hard work we have collectively invested. It is thus gratifying that after a rigorous engagement with the Commission for University Education (CUE) we were able to fulfil the expectations for the accreditation process. The Council is proud of the role played by each one of us towards this achievement.
Machakos University College has tremendously transformed over the years. Founded in 1957 as Machakos Technical Rural Training School, it has undergone several changes; Machakos Technical and Trade School in 1958, Machakos Technical School in 1967, Machakos Technical Training Institute in 1987 and on 16th September, 2011, through the Legal Notice No. 130, the institution was upgraded to its current status. Having been established and grown as a Technical Institute, Machakos University College has cut a niche in training quality technical personnel in the areas of Motor Vehicle Engineering, Electrical and Electronics, Clothing, Textile and Fashion Design, Hospitality and Civil Engineering, Business, Education, Environment, Agribusiness and Applied Sciences. The University currently boasts of having some of the best equipped engineering workshops and laboratories in the country. The University is anchored on the principles of research and the training of skilled manpower that will revolutionalise service delivery for the country and the world at large. It is part of this that has helped to nurture the institution to what it is today. Indeed, with the award of the charter, Machakos University College will reposition itself in a more assertive way as a leading hub of knowledge in terms of knowledge delivery for a more demanding market. The University College abrogates itself the responsibility of being a gatekeeper to quality education; the production of highly qualified and skilled manpower that will lead to innovation, revamping and reinvigorating the social, political and economic platforms of the nation and the world at large.
The Council appreciates the enviable position of research in our institutions of higher learning. In this regard, the mandate now is upon the university management and the entire university structure to strive to achieve more and build a solid educational reputation nationally and internationally. In particular, Machakos University will be keen to focus on science oriented courses in order to meet the gap in innovation and development. However, this will not be done at the expense of the arts and social sciences since we recognise that a mechanised world cannot be holistic without a human face. Being ISO 9001: 2008 QMS Certified, I believe that Machakos University shall strive to adhere to the demands of quality education and remain true to the University motto: education for industrial and economic development Elimu na Ustawi.
