Machakos University held the celebration on 21st March and raised awareness of the importance of all types of forests. The theme addresses, 'Forests for sustainable cities'. The event was organized by Machakos University and County Governments of Machakos, Kitui and Makueni, Kenya Forest Service, KEFRI, East Africa Portland Cement Co., ICRAF, Savanna Cement, INADES, KBC Mwatu FM, Ene FM and Athiani FM among other organizations. Approximately 5000 seedlings were planted in five locations, namely Katoloni Pimary School, Kivandini Primary School, A.I.C Mumbuni, A.I.C. Kithini and Machakos University. The event was flagged off from Machakos University by both Deputy Vice-Chancellor ( in charge of Research, Innovation and Linkages) and Deputy Vice Chancel (Administration, Planning and Finance) Hon. Faith Wahome, Minister for Education, Youth & Social Welfare assisted by Hon. John Musili, Minister for Lands Energy, Environment and Natural Resources- Machakos County -planting a tree at Katoloni Primary School.
