Machakos University, better known for its golden years as Machakos Technical Training Institute is admitting over 1,000 new TVET students to enroll in various Diploma and Certificate programs under the Directorate of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
University Clinic
The University has a well-equipped Health Unit where Basic laboratory tests, Clinical diagnosis, treatment of common illnesses, Minor surgical procedures Voluntary Counseling and Testing for HIV/AIDS (VCT) other health related issues are done. In addition, there Collaboration and referrals with leading health service providers around the country for Major and more chronic illnesses.
The Health Unit is run by qualified medical staff that are available during the official working hours. A clinician is on call at night, during weekends and on public holidays.
Guidance and Counseling
Mental health is an integral part of overall health. Machakos University Guidance and Counseling department offer services that include counselling, student mental health advice, exam concessions and arrangements, mentoring and peer support.
Student Hostel Accommodation
The University has a total of 7 hostels; 3 for men and 4 for ladies, with a total bed capacity of 444. (This has reduced to 220 due to COVID-19 regulations). Priority is normally given to students living with disability, special needs and first year students who have provided such information beforehand to the Dean of Students. Due to the limited accommodation, the University has a MOU with external hostel service providers to ensure our students are accommodated in favorable conditions. Student Mess and University Hotel
The University also owns and runs the Machakos University Hotel and Conference Centre which doubles up as a Training facility to the Students under taking Hospitality courses. Students can enjoy different cuisines provided by the Hotel at pocket friendly prices.
Student Centre
We believe there’s more to university than just attending lectures. Students learn best in environments where their social, emotional and physical well-being is nurtured. Machakos University has a student center where students can refresh their bodies and minds and make their leisure time more interesting and enjoyable.
Games, Sports and Co-Curricular
Machakos University is a force to reckon with when it comes to Sporting, Music and Nurturing talents. Machakos University believes in inclusivity and in addition to outdoor sports and games, there are indoor games and sporting activities that involve small groups, teams and are relevant to Student of different levels of skill, abilities (such as persons with disabilities) to participate.
Career Services Office
Today the workforce changing and career pathways are evolving into a series of developmental opportunities offering various forms of career movement encompassing new skills, experiences and perspectives. The University has established a Career Services Office staffed by trained professionals to assist students develop soft skills which employers seek (including effective communication, acting as a team player, creative / critical thinking, and problem-solving) through extra-curricular initiatives.
The University Career Services Office offer a wide range of support to Students including but not limited to careers advice, including graduate placements, organizing for careers fairs, networking / mentoring opportunities coaching on interview techniques, support with job applications and further study opportunities.
Student Insurance
The University runs an Insurance Policy that provides cover to students while still on study. Its renewable annually and provides compensation for death, permanent disability, medical expenses and funeral expenses arising from an injury to a student as a result of an accident.
Security
The University under the Directorate of Security and Safety (DSS) ensures all the University rules, regulations and laws of the land are enforced by carrying out investigation of crimes and other offenses levelled against our students and staff.
The Directorate works closely with the National police service to bolster security in and around the University. To ensure a round the clock security and monitoring real-time potential crimes/incidence, the University has a CCTV surveillance system and control security Communications around the Campus.
Attachment & internship
The University views attachments and internships as necessary tools in gaining working skills and experience and has thus established an Industrial & Attachment office that is mandated to assist Students to find attachment and internship opportunities while in campus.
