Machakos University Holds A Handing-Over Ceremony for The New Chairman of Council

Machakos University on 16th December 2025 hosted a formal handing-over ceremony for the incoming Chairman of Council, Mr. Peter Maangi Mitiambo, at the University Tuition and Innovation Complex Rooftop. The event brought together invited guests, members of the University Senate, heads of departments, staff, and student leaders, marking an important transition in the University’s governance.

The Former Chairman of Council, Dr. Christopher Gatama Gakahu, arrived at the venue accompanied by the Gazetted Chairman of Council, Mr. Peter Maangi Mitiambo, and other Council members. They were officially received by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joyce Agalo, PhD, who welcomed all attendees and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to effective leadership and good governance.
The ceremony commenced with introductions of Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, student leadership, and invited guests, followed by a welcome address from the Vice-Chancellor. The occasion was enriched by performances from the Students’ Choir and the Staff Choir, adding a celebratory tone to the event.
The highlight of the ceremony was the Oath of Office, presided over by Advocate Charles Njenga, during which Mr. Peter Maangi Mitiambo was formally sworn in as Chairman of Council alongside Mr. George Marete Mbaabu, Representative of the State Department for Higher Education, and Hon. Ibrahim Abdi Mude, Independent Council Member.

This was followed by the issuance of key Instruments of Governance, including the Universities Act, the Machakos University Charter (2016), University Statutes (2019), Mwongozo Code of Conduct, the Strategic Plan 2023/2024–2027/2028, Performance Contracting documents for 2025/2026, the Council Almanac and Budget for FY 2025/2026, the Approved University Budget for FY 2025/2026, and the Financial Quarterly Reports for Q1 of FY 2025/2026.
Speeches were delivered by the Presiding Chairman of Council, CPA Felix Kilonzi Nthenge, H.S.C., the Outgoing Chairman of Council, Dr. Christopher Gatama Gakahu, who presented the handing-over report, and the Incoming Chairman of Council, Mr. Peter Maangi Mitiambo, who outlined his leadership vision for the University.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks and closing prayer led by the Vice-Chancellor, after which the University leadership and Council members participated in a ceremonial tree-planting exercise at the University sports ground. The tree planting symbolized sustainability, continuity, and the University’s commitment to environmental conservation and future generations.
