Dr. Justin Kyalo is a development scholar with extensive experience in community-focused and policy-relevant research. His scholarly work examines conservation agriculture, rural livelihoods, climate resilience, and grassroots empowerment, with a particular focus on Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). His research adopts interdisciplinary approaches that integrate development studies, sociology, and agricultural development to generate evidence for inclusive and sustainable rural transformation.
He serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Social Sciences, School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Machakos University, and is currently the Chairman of the Department of Social Sciences. In recognition of his academic excellence, he was awarded Lecturer of the Year (School of Humanities and Social Sciences) at Machakos University in 2023.
Dr. Kyalo holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Development Studies and a Master of Science in Development Studies (Project Management option)from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology (JKUAT). He has an active publication record in peer-reviewed international journals, with research outputs addressing agricultural development, livelihood outcomes, community participation, and natural resource management.
He has demonstrated capacity in research grant attraction, having secured competitive funding for development-oriented research projects, and continues to engage in collaborative research initiatives. Dr. Kyalo is actively involved in postgraduate supervision, mentoring Master’s and PhD students in development-related fields.
In recognition of his scholarly standing, Dr. Kyalo serves as an External Examiner for the Department of Social Sciences and Development Studies at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA). He also contributes to the academic community as a peer reviewer for several reputable journals, including the International Journal of Research and Innovation in Social Scienceand theJournal of the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO.
