Design Seminar for Postgraduate Students: From Concept to Impact

On 2nd September 2025, the Department of Design at Machakos University hosted a high-level seminar exclusively tailored for postgraduate students, under the theme: “Concept to Impact: Delivering Transformative Design.”
The event brought together the current eight Master’s students for a day of intensive discussion and advanced learning on research opportunities in the design space. Discussions were steered by renowned guest design scholars, Dr. Mary Claire Kidenda (Technical University of Kenya), and Dr. Juliet Isika (Kenyatta University), alongside a dynamic, multidisciplinary team from Machakos University, including Prof. Mugendi M’rithaa (Design), Dr. Benta Oguda (Design), Dr. Samuel Kiumbuku (Environmental Sciences), Dr. Eric Omuya (ICT), Dr. Justin Kyalo (Social Sciences), Dr. Florence Mmbwanga (Linguistics), Ms. Coletta Matayo (Design),and Ms. Rose Kitheka (Design).
The seminar focused on bridging the gap between design theory and advanced, practice-based research. It was meticulously structured as a rigorous, immersive, practice-driven experience, pushing students beyond undergraduate fundamentals into the world of rigorous research and advanced design application. Participants engaged in presentations, feedback sessions, and stimulating case studies that challenged their assumptions and broadened their perspectives.

- Sustainable and Responsible Design Practices
- Design for Safety Using Emerging Technologies
- Craftsmanship and the Evolution of Design Production
The seminar gave our postgraduate cohort a vital opportunity to challenge their assumptions and refine their research approaches. The interactive format enabled them to delve deeper into complex topics, to sharpen their critical thinking, refine their research approaches, and gain fresh insights from some of the most respected voices in design.
This seminar stands as a testament to the department’s commitment to nurturing innovators and thought leaders in the design profession. The knowledge and perspectives gained will undoubtedly enrich ongoing student research and shape future project outcomes.
