Machakos University recently hosted a transformative Productivity Improvement Strategy Workshop facilitated by the National Productivity and Competitiveness Centre (NPCC) from April 23rd to 25th, 2025. This high-impact workshop brought together university leadership and staff in a collective effort to strengthen institutional performance and promote a culture of continual improvement and enhanced service delivery.

The training was led by NPCC’s experienced productivity experts, Dr. Nahashon L. Moitaleel, Secretary, Productivity, Mr. Samuel Mulei, Deputy Director, and Mr. Wanjala Chrispinus, Senior Productivity Officer, who focused on equipping participants with essential knowledge, practical skills, and strategic frameworks for workplace improvement.
Key areas of discussion included:
- Productivity Management Frameworks
- Root Cause Analysis for Workplace Challenges based on the University Metrics
- Development and Finalization of Improvement Strategies
The participants engaged in interactive, hands-on sessions designed to identify inefficiencies, analyze underlying issues, and develop sustainable strategies to boost efficiency across departments to enhance institutional performance. The workshop underscored the importance of proactive productivity planning to achieve organizational excellence in education and to realize the productivity dream.
The NPCC Productivity Secretary reviewed the progress of the workshop and reinforced the significance of the initiative. During this period, he also paid a courtesy call to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joyce Agalo, further strengthening the partnership between the two institutions.
In his address, Dr. Moitaleel highlighted the constitutional imperative outlined in Article 230(5) (c) of the Kenyan Constitution, which emphasizes “the need to recognize productivity and performance.”

He noted that: “Productivity is a self-interrogating tool, not merely a cross-cutting issue. For institutions to thrive, it is essential that all staff, from top leadership to operational levels, are trained and aligned with productivity principles.”
The University’s Registrar, Administration, and Planning, and Chair of the Productivity Mainstreaming Committee, Dr. Humphrey Omondi, emphasized the collaborative effort and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to productivity, performance, and organizational excellence.
This strategic initiative marks a significant step in aligning higher education with national productivity goals and public sector transformation, positioning Machakos University as a centre of excellence committed to continual growth and improved service delivery.
