MACHAKOS UNIVERSITY STUDENT EMERGES AS A THIRD PRIZE WINNER IN THE AFRICAN HUMAN RIGHTS 2025 ESSAY COMPETITION.

Machakos University student, Michael Ombasa Nicodemus, a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Education Arts (English and Literature), has emerged in third position in the prestigious African Human Rights Inter-University Essay Competition organized by the International Human Rights Art Movement.

This continental competition, held virtually in Nigeria between May and July 2025, brought together brilliant minds from Universities across Africa to engage in important conversations about human rights, social justice, and the future of our continent.

Michael Ombasa’s essay, “Bridging the Gap: Human Rights, Youth Empowerment, and Africa’s Developmental Promise”, focuses on youth empowerment as both a moral duty and a fundamental human right. The essay highlights the urgent need to address barriers such as marginalization, gender inequality, and mental health challenges facing the youth.

Michael Ombasa’s achievement is a reflection of Machakos University’s commitment to not only nurturing talents but also helping students to co-create sustainable futures through continued mentorship and support, and linking them to opportunities both locally and globally.
