MksU Excels at the 2025 Machakos A.S.K Show Earning Top Awards

Machakos University once again demonstrated its leadership in innovation, research, and community impact at the 2025 Machakos National Agricultural Society of Kenya (A.S.K) Show, held from June 4th to 8th at the Machakos Showground. With a strong focus on this year’s theme, “Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiatives for Sustainable Economic Growth,” the university proudly clinched first place in several categories, competing among the country’s top institutions.

The university’s stand captivated judges and visitors alike with its display of innovative research, climate-resilient agricultural practices, and practical solutions drawn from its various Schools and Departments. Through hands-on demonstrations and community-focused innovations, Machakos University aligned its entire presentation with the national conversation on sustainable agriculture, technology integration, and economic transformation.

The official opening of this year’s show was graced by distinguished guests, including national and county leaders. Prof. David Mulwa, Registrar, Research, Innovation & Linkages represented Machakos University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joyce Agalo, who ushered the dignitaries to the university’s exhibition stands. Among the notable guests were Prof Felix Kioli who represented the ASK Chief Guest, Prof Douglas Shitanda, and Mr. Lawrence Matolo, the South Eastern ASK Chairman.

The University was represented by a multidisciplinary team drawn from various departments, including:

Academic Departments:

Department of Agricultural Sciences:

Showcased water-efficient vegetable farming techniques, Azzola farming (for livestock feed, bio-fertilizer, and mosquito control), and fish pond farming.

Department of Environmental Sciences:

Presented drought-resistant tree species and technologies for sustainable food production in semi-arid areas.

Department of Health Sciences:

Demonstrated healthy dietary practices, medical equipment for vital signs monitoring, and university ambulance services.

Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering:

Featured Innovations included:

• Thermochromics technology using natural cabbage dye
  • A fridge built with local materials
  • “Gym Power” – converting human energy into electricity for home use
• Department of Hospitality Management (TVET):
  Operated a live demo hotel, showcasing TVET courses and student-produced culinary products.
• Department of Fashion Design and Clothing Technology (TVET):
  Displayed custom-designed garments and textile products made by students.
• Department of Design:
  Presented creative, locally made designs in fabric and materials.
• ICT Department:
  Educated the public on using the university’s digital platforms, research portals, and technologies at the Luban Workshop.

Support & Services Departments:

• Department of Corporate Affairs and Public Relations:
  Offered university brochures, admissions information, and public engagement on university programs.
• Security Department:
  Demonstrated campus surveillance using CCTV technology and other campus safety protocols.
