Machakos University and National Housing Corporation Join Forces to Tackle Student Housing Challenges

In a proactive move to address the pressing need for affordable student accommodation in Machakos University, Machakos University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joyce J. Agalo alongside key members of the university’s management team, embarked on a courtesy visit to National Housing Corporation, Kenya. Led by Machakos University’s Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Planning and Finance – Prof. Mugendi M’Rithaa, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic and Student Affairs – Prof. James Muola, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Research, Innovation and Linkages – Prof. Stanley Makindi, the Chief Finance Officer – Mr. Francis Wambua, Head Legal Affairs – Ms. Mumbi Mwihurih, and the University Dean of Students – Dr. Alex Kamwaria, the delegation aimed to explore collaborative opportunities for constructing affordable student hostels within the University’s premises.

National Housing Corporation (NHC) Kenya, led by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, QS. David Mathu Njuguna, MBS, stands as a governmental property development company committed to addressing affordable housing needs nationwide.

The collaboration between Machakos University and National Housing Corporation is guided by a comprehensive set of Terms of Reference, including:

  1. Identifying Areas of Collaboration and Executing a Memorandum of Understanding: Establishing a formal framework to solidify the partnership and streamline collaborative efforts.
  2. Engaging to Ensure Construction of Affordable Student Accommodation: Prioritizing the development and construction of affordable housing options tailored specifically for the student community.
  3. Leveraging Resource Mobilization Strategies: Implementing joint resource mobilization strategies to facilitate fundraising endeavours through collaborative proposal writing initiatives.
  4. Engaging in Research Initiatives: Initiating research endeavours aimed at enhancing the student living experience and addressing pertinent housing challenges.
  5. Exploring Student Internship Opportunities: Providing students with valuable internship opportunities within the realm of housing development and management.
  6. Conducting a Feasibility Study on Student Hostel Establishment: Undertaking a thorough feasibility study to assess the viability and logistics of establishing student hostels within Machakos University.
  7. Conducting a Baseline Survey to Identify Student Needs: Conducting a comprehensive baseline survey to understand the specific needs and preferences of the student population regarding accommodation.
