Machakos University proudly announces the successful conclusion of STEM center launch, an event that epitomized innovation, education, and empowerment. Held on January 25th 2024, this initiative showcased Machakos University’s commitment in advancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education and fostering a culture of innovation and creativity. The Center established in partnership with STEMpower.inc consists of a virtual laboratory and a Physics laboratory.
Esteemed guests from various corners of the globe, alongside local dignitaries and enthusiastic learners from surrounding primary and secondary schools converged to celebrate and advocate for the advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education at Machakos University. The event showcased a diverse range of programs aimed at nurturing the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders in the STEM fields.
The inauguration was graced by prominent dignitaries including, Mr. Fredrick Ndambuki, Secretary Administration who represented the Principal Secretary, Higher Education and Research. The presence of the Chief Guest underscored the government’s commitment to promoting STEM education and research at the highest levels. Machakos County Commissioner representative Ms. Judy Wanjiru presence was evidence of the collaborative efforts between Machakos County government and educational institutions in advancing STEM education and innovation. Present also was the Chief Officer at the Machakos County Governor’s office Mr. Charles Mutinda whose presence demonstrated the local government’s dedication to fostering innovation and collaboration within the community. Area Member of County Assembly (MCA)’s presence was a testimony of the partnership between the university and the local community
During the launch, key leaders of STEM Initiative Mr. Edwin Kumfa and Ms. Lucy Biel were acknowledged for their dedication in bringing the project to fruition. The presence of Dr. Edwin Kumfa, the esteemed Chief Executive Officer of STEM POWER based at the Africa Regional Office in Addis Ababa at the Machakos University Centre launch left a lasting impact on all attendees. Through his visionary leadership, Dr. Kumfa has pioneered initiatives that bridge the gap between academia and industry, empowering students to excel in the ever-evolving field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. His esteemed presence served as a catalyst for inspiration, igniting a passion for learning and discovery among faculty and students alike. Dr. Kumfa’s commitment to advancing STEM education has undoubtedly laid the foundation for a brighter and more prosperous future for the university and its community. Mr. Rene Kiamba, who introduced the Centre Coordinator, Dr Michael Musembi to STEMpower Inc. attended the event too.
Ms. Lucy Biel, South Sudan Country Director of STEMpower was in attendance during the launch event at Machakos University. Ms. Biel’s leadership in promoting STEM initiatives in South Sudan has been instrumental in empowering youth and driving socio-economic development in the region. Her partnership with Dr. Kumfa and STEMpower reflects a shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of scientists across Africa. Their joint participation in the university’s launch event served as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of education and international cooperation in driving positive change.
Speaking during the occasion the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joyce Agalo expressed her gratitude to all stakeholders involved in making the launch a reality and highlighted the importance of STEM education in the driving socio-economic progress in the community and country. The Vice Chancellor underscored the university’s dedication to providing students with access to cutting-edge resources and opportunities that will equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving world. Prof. Agalo reiterated the University’s vision of becoming a hub of excellence in STEM education and research, emphasizing the transformative impact that STEM initiatives will have on empowering individuals and communities to build a brighter future.
The ceremony concluded by signing of a Project Implementation Agreement between Machakos University and STEMpower Inc. to advance STEM education initiatives at the University and beyond. The vice Chancellor together with the chief guest and STEMpower leaders unveiled the STEM Center plaque which marked the official launch of the initiative, symbolizing a commitment to excellence and empowerment. Participants had the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities and demonstrations of a 3D printer – a type of additive manufacturing technology that creates three-dimensional objects layer by layer from digital models or computer-aided design (CAD) files, showcasing the exciting possibilities of STEM education.
